To Alice

I've been inspired recently by the pictures which Kate has been posting and it will end up costing me money, as I have to replace my old faithful Nikon with one of those new fangled digital jobbies.

Anyway, as Kate is about to get the decorations dusted off and everyone is preparing for the Festival of Greed in their own way, all your posts prompted me to pass on one of the memories of Christmas that will stay with me forever.

I was down at the boatyard which is owned by one of my oldest friends and he asked if I would mind nipping over with him to see his mother and deliver some garden furniture.
His mother's name was Alice, she sadly passed away a couple of years ago, and she was a wonderful character. She was from an old Romany family and had a real twinkle in her eye, a superb dry sense of humour and a real warmth, calmness and wisdom that made you think "well that's o.k. then".

We loaded up the truck and drove the five miles to Alice's house, un-loaded the garden table and struggled with it down the side of the house and into the back garden.
"Where do you want this Alice" I asked, and that's when it started.

Alice - "You see that bit down the bottom by the hedge"?

Us - (carrying the table) "yes"

Alice - "Well don't put it there because it only gets the sun in the morning. That grass by the apple tree....."

Us - (carrying the table) "yes"

Alice - "I don't think I want it there....."

This went on for a bit and the we said "don't tell us where you don't want it Alice, it's too bloody heavy to run around the garden with"

We settled on the perfect spot in the end and Alice suggested we had a cup of tea and could we help her sort her decorations for the tree.
We were greeted by 2 large boxes of baubles and tinsel and 2 large boxes of tree lights which looked they had been dragged through somewhere that lights shouldn't be dragged.
A nice cup of tea and 45 minutes later we had un-tangled the lights and checked through every single bulb to make sure they were all tight and would not pose a fire risk.
30 minutes later we had to admit that we couldn't get any of the damn things to work and did Alice want us to get her some new ones.
All this time Alice and her neighbour had us in hysterics with their stories and were watching us getting more and more frustrated at our failure to fix the lights.

Alice - "That's o.k. they didn't work last year either so I got some more, do you want another cup of tea"?

It always makes me smile when I think of that morning over at Alice's house and it's a shame that the spirit of friendship, family and good humour is lacking in these days of consumerism and selfishness.

We will raise a glass to Alice again this year as we meander down the river to the Wherry Pub for our annual winter trip and remember the laughs we shared for so many years.

Now see, thats why Kate has a camera. To capture all of those god awful reflectively funny moments that make us continue with the christmas tradition. The guys getting tangled up in lights which turn out not to work, laughter, tears and hands resting on an over extended belly.

Cheers, Alice.
Give my best to Colin and Linda when you see them.

Bless Alice. Sounds a good day you had, Full - where's a photo then with your new toy? Can't wait.

Thanks for the giggle. Bless Alice!

Have you been peeking Kate, how did you know about my over extended belly?

They send their best Dive.

Lynn,I havn't got my new toy yet.
I can't make my mind up and I'm getting so much inspiration from Kates pictures.
It's too difficult to choose and I'm getting all confused now.

HELP!!!!!

Oooh depends how much you have to spend. My choice is Canon EOS 40D or better still, 400. Or the Nikon 40 mmmmm.

So you're not getting inspiration from MY pics then. Herrumph.

Of course I do Lynn.
Nice "herrumph" buy the way!

I looked at the Canon EOS 400 and they have some deals on those at the moment.
Under £500 would be good for me as I want to buy some nice big rugs. Wooden floors are nice but can be a little cool on the feet this time of year.

I also like the look of the G9.
Same sort of spec but more compact.

I need some serious time in a shop poking around and playing with a few cameras to compare how they feel.
Looking at them on line only makes it more tricky to choose.

Definately do the cannon. Its such a great camera to use and its not as big as it seems.
I'm using a 350D at the moment and I'm about to get the 400.

Wish i could get the 400 just can't afford it at the moment. In fact i wish i could come shopping with you! Playing with cameras wow best type of shopping. Rugs are great too, but given the choice... i'd probably buy some slippers and turn the heating up.

That's a great story, Full. The only sentimentality I have for Christmas comes from sories like that.

Me too Fresh.
Beer also helps a lot.

"It's not as big as it seems" Kate, I'm sure I've heard those words before!!
Did some checking on the Red & Blues over the weekend.
Is next season going to be better?
I will follow their progress from afar. Go Knights!!!

Lynn, should I wait until you come to Norwich so you can help, or should I drag Dive down to your neck of the woods for coffee and camera shopping?

Wow what a fab idea! I really don't know when i'm next in Norwich, so... but then again i don't know any good camera shops here!

As to the size issue, I'll leave that one alone. :)))))

My beloved red and blues will be unrecognisable next season. We have a diabolically evil coach who needs to be dragged from his cosy control box and ritually drawn and quartered on the field.
Which may not be to far from what eventually happens. We once as a town took exception to a biased ref who from then on was flown in by helicopter and surrounded by security guards. He was escorted on and off the field for any home game.
Management is giving in to the popular practice of giving anyone of islander heritage a jersey.
Next season we'll end up with the wooden spoon and a small mob of supporters rather than the twenty thousand strong red and blue army at games.

They are all average Kate.

Except for mine which is bloody enormous. (snigger)

We had some problems at Leicester Tigers a few years ago when Deano was sacked by the chairman.
Not a popular move to get rid of a player and coach who won so much with the Tigers and England and was a local hero.

Union is my passion but I am a fan of the 13 man game and I enjoy the pace and physicality but only really follow St Helens.
I will look forward to seeing what the season brings to the Red & Blues and if anyone gets hung from the main stand at the Energy Stadium.

You could try the internet for your local "Ugly Mobs 'R' Us" and hire some help.
